A Delta Magistrate Court 1 sitting in Asaba has remanded a police Inspector, Ebri Ubi who shot dead a phone dealer, Onyeka Ibe while on duty along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the State.

The detention was sequel to a remand proceedings for the murder of the deceased in the presence of his wife.

The court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Center while the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and prosecution.

Ibe was murdered over N100. 00 extortion by the suspect while on stop and search duty along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the State.

The suspect plea, was not taken, while his bail, was equally not granted in response to the opposition bythe prosecutor, G. O Okwegbe, Esq.

The case was adjourned till May 8 2023.

According to the Charge Sheet with charge No. CMA/135 between the Commissioner of Police as Complainant and Ubi Ebri as Defendant, reads: “that you Ubi Ebri “m” on the 5th day of April 2023 along Asaba/Ugbolu road in the Asaba Magistrate District did unlawfully kill one Ibeh Onyeka ‘m’ by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap. C 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006″.

A press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Edafe Bright later reads: “following the murder of one Onyeka Ibe who was allegedly shot at by one Inspector Ubi Ebri attached to Area Command Patrol Team while on stop and search duty along Ugbolu-Illah road on 5/4/2023, the Command wishes to inform members of the public as promised, that the said Inspector has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police force after the conclusion of the Orderly Room trial at the Delta State Police Headquarters.”

DSP Edafe added, “the dismissed inspector was today arraigned on Wednesday, March 19, 2023 before Asaba Magistrate Court on a remand proceedings for the murder of Onyeka Ibe.”

He added, “the court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi Uku Correctional Center while the case file be sent to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and prosecution of the suspect by the office of the DPP.”

Speaking further, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO)said, “the Command has therefore tasked officers and men to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), while hoping that this will serve as a deterrent to others.”
