Hon. Clark Ebikeme

The Burutu Local Government Chairman made this statement while receiving some members of the Burutu community who were in his office at the local government Secretariat for the flag off of the “Poverty Alleviation Programme in the Local government area.

He said the programme which is intended to bring succour to the needy, is targeted at the widows, the aged and the less privileged, adding that these category of people will be drawn from the communities and Wards that make up Burutu local government area.

According to the Chairman, the  Programme, which will run throughout his tenure in office, is meant to put food on the table, and smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries, adding that it will also help in curbing or minimizing vices in the Council area.

Speaking further he said, that the Programme will have an initial take off number of about 500 persons, while enjoining those whose names did not make the initial list not to be disheartened as more beneficiaries will be added to the initial five hundred from time to time as the need arises.

The Chairman who likened the Poverty Alleviation Programme to the Social Welfare Scheme as practiced in the Western World, told his people that the beneficiaries will be assigned duties to justify the money that will be paid to them.

He therefore, appealed to them not to see the gesture as a means of partaking in the sharing of the national cake, but as an opportunity for them to contribute their own quota towards the development of the local council area, the state and the nation as a whole.
