Team Nigeria has won the maiden edition of the Africa Youth Athletic Championship that took place in Warri with a total of 35 medals; 13 gold, 10 Silver and 12 bronze medals.

Team Niger thrilled the spectators at the stadium with their wonderful performances in the entire event they participated in.

Egypt came second with a total of 16 medals, comprising 8 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals. Egypt, which was tipped as the favorite of the tournament could not beat the excellent performance of Team Nigeria as they were forced to trial behind.

 

Ethiopia came third with a total of 23 medals of 6 gold, 13 silver and 6 bronze. The youth tournament is meant to discover young talents for Africa. A total of thirty-eight gold medal was won at the end of the competition which featured twenty-eight countries in the continent.

 

Fourth on the medals table was Ethiopia who clinched 6 gold, 13 silver and 6 bronze medals ahead of mountain-running Kenya which sat on the 5th position on the table with 5 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals while Gambia pulled 2 gold medals to be closely followed by Eritrea  and Morocco with one gold each.

A total of sixty-one events were keenly contested in the 4-day event comprising of thirty-three countries from all parts of Africa.
