The Isoko North Local Government Council has shut down the Ozoro abattoir over unhygienic environment capable of endangering the lives of residents consuming meats from the abattoir.
The clampdown was carried out by the Council Boss, Hon Emmanuel Egbabor who was represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr Kome Ozue during an inspection of the abattoir today.  Ozue led the team which comprises the Head of the Environment department, a combined team comprising of men of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Ozoro Division, the head of State Security Services. and other officials of the Local Governmen and journalists.
Speaking to newsmen, the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr Kome Ozue said, “The decision to shut down the abattoir is as a result of the unhygienic environment where cows are being slaughtered for human consumption.
“The Local Government is concerned about the wellbeing of residents, and will not mortgage the health of the people as a result of the attitude of unscrupulous businessmen and women who do not prioritise health and good hygiene in their operations.
“As you can see, the abattoir is not kept tidy by those operating in it. The wastewater, blood and refuges generated from the meat processing are not being discharged adequately into the drains. Also the drains are not being keep from silt and overgrown weeds” he remarked.
He however directed that proper renovation be commenced immediately to give the abattoir a facelift to meet require standard before it will be reopen for business.
