As part of measures aimed at  checking the influx of substandard products in the state as well as enhancing comsumers’ protection, the Delta State Government, has  inaugurated a seven – man Consumers Protection Committee (CPC) with the State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Barrister ( Mrs. ) Mary Iyasere as Chairman.

Other members of the committee include;  The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor Esq, President,  Delta Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture ( DACCIMA, Sir. Simon Asite, Director, Pharmaceutical services,  Ministry of Health, Mrs. Kate Ekonye,  Director of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry,  Mr. Felix Oseji, (Secretary of the Committee)Weights and Measures Department,  Federal Ministry of Trade and investment, Mr. Mackson and a representative of Consumers Protection Council.

Meanwhile, the committee has the following persons as co – opted members; Mr Bernard Nwosu,  Consumer Interest Association, Mr. Michael Akarume, Special Assistant to the the Hon. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry,  Barrister Ignatus Orisewezie,  Orits and Partners and Mr. James Okoh.

Inaugurating the Committee  in Asaba, the State Deputy Governor, Barrister Kingsley Otuaro while saying that the effort is in pursuant to the realities of the provision of Consumer Protect Act of 1992 as amended in 2014, is also, in tandem with the state government’s vision of ” Prosperity For All Deltans ” initiative

He said,  ” As a government,  we promised to deliver ” Prosperity To All Deltans “;  we did not promise to deliver prosperity to sick and dying Deltans.  Therefore, we are committed to ensuring that there is no loss of life or anything whatsoever arising from the consumption of products from any company or industry in the state and beyond.

“We want our people to be healthy. So, your responsibility is to ensure that you help to keep a health citizenry I  the state. You should ensure that lives are protected as they go about consuming commodities produced by the various companies and industries.

“We want to charge you to deliver take this assignment seriously ensuring  that you deliver on this all – important abd onerous responsibility of ensuring the protection of consumers in the state” Otuaro stated.

Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman, Barrister ( Mrs. ) Mary Iyasere while describing the committee as mini-NAFDAC in the state,  pledged the committee’s commitment to deliver on their mandate, assuring that they will work assiduously towards stamping out substandard products in the state.

To drive on the mandate, Iyasere said that plans are already in the Pipeline to inaugurate local government area members of the committee, which she started will commence anytime soon.
