Vexed by what they described as bloated electricity bills allegedly being imposed on the people by the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, (BEDC), women of Agbarha-Otor community, Ughelli North Local Government Area, have vowed to boycott the forthcoming general election if the anomaly is not addressed.

Professor Chinedu Nebo, Minister of Power.

The women, who embarked on a protest against the outrageous electricity bills at the weekend, disclosed that several attempts by the community to prevail on the company to make the bills affordable to them had fallen on deaf ears.

Speaking on behalf of the women, Mrs. Queen Egodotaire lamented that the people were being forced to pay bloated electricity bill despite the epileptic power supply in the community.

According to her, “every month they come up with electricity bills that we cannot afford to pay. Besides, how they arrive at this huge amount they impose on us, we do not understand. That is why we are using this medium to call on the government to prevail on BEDC to make the electricity bills affordable. We are from oil producing community, so cannot be made to suffer so much despite our contribution to the wealth of this country.”

Speaking in the same vein, Mrs. Omotejohwo Akpomedaye and Mrs. Doris Eda accused the company of being insensitive to the plight of the people, urging the government to take urgent steps to wade into the matter.
