The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Education, Hon. Salo Adikumo, has been honoured with an award of excellence for his developmental in the education sector.

Giving reasons for the award last Saturday in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Contractors Association stated that the commissioner has created and maintained a mutual and good working relationship with Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, towards realising the aim for which the state of emergency on the educational sector was declared.

The body also said the Honourable Commissioner played a key role in the completion of some of the major projects in the education sector which include: the renovation of dilapidated school buildings all over the state, the commencement of the Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science, the Youth Corpers Orientation Camp and synergy with its parastatals like the Niger Delta University (NDU) amongst others.

Responding to the award, Hon. Salo Adikumo, expressed gratitude to God for the award given to him.
According to him, they were given mandate to revamp the education sector on assumption of office.

Hon. Adikumo notes that Bayelsa State was behind in the education sector in Nigeria. He also said that all children in government schools will be wearing state government uniform in about 2-3 weeks’
time.

He stated that they have already distributed textbooks to all the primary schools. He added that they have just procured textbooks for secondary schools but they have not distributed them.

The Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr. Walton Liverpool, said that they are very grateful with the award; that it will motivate them to do more.

He added that they have not even started; that Bayelsa will be heading for 1st or 2nd by the time they are through with the ongoing projects in the state.
