The centre also congratulated the new Coordinator of Amnesty Program, Brigadier General Boroh (rtd) on his well-deserved appointment.

According to a press statement signed by CEPEJ Coordinator, Comrade Sheriff Mulade and made available to out correspondent, Brigadier General Boroh is a round peg in a round hole.

Comrade Sheriff said Brigadier General Boroh is an acclaimed peace-keeping and conflict management expert, and the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre (NAPKC) in Kaduna, adding that he believes that going by his experience in security and peace the amnesty program will flourish under him.

The statement reads: “He will make significant contributions to the security situation in the country and consolidate on the relative peace and security in the Niger Delta as well as help to put an end to the issues of the payment of the backlogs of the stipends of the former agitators.

“We urge the new Coordinator to formulate policy framework that would lead to the speedy resolution of recent hitches in the implementation of the Amnesty Program such as the non-payment of outstanding allowances to ex-militants.

“We strongly believe that without the cooperation of the beneficiaries and critical stakeholders in the Niger Delta, the policies of the new Coordinator would not bring about the needed results,” the centre stated.

CEPEJ also condemn in strong terms the attitudes of some of the beneficiaries who often resort to violent protests to drive home their demands for payment of outstanding stipends, advising the former agitator to always toe the line of dialogue in addressing their grievances.

They also called on the federal government to release without further delay funds for the payment of the arrears of salaries of the former agitators and revive the programme for efficiency.
