THE Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Sheriff Oborevwori has said  that the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration will ensure that athletes from the state excel in international sporting events.

Rt. Hon. Oborevwori made the disclosure on Tuesday  in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State while declaring open, the Warri Relays and Confederation of African Athletics Grand Prix sponsored by the Delta State Government in conjunction with the

Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

According to the Speaker who represented Governor Okowa at the event, “the Governor Okowa-led administration is eager to support athletics and sports because we want our young athletes to succeed in their careers and to also, excel at the biggest stages like the Olympics, World Championship and the All African Games.”

“We are always glad to be part of this event and other activities geared towards the encouragement, empowerment and development of our youths,” the Speaker said, adding, “As you are already aware, Delta State is home of Sports and Athletics.”

He reiterated that; “We have produced international and national champions for decades and from the results from the national sports festivals, you can attest to the fact that Delta State will continue to take its pride of place in sporting in national and international sporting events.”

“Recall that we recently organised Principal Cup because, we are determined to catch them young and today, it is a thing of joy that a lot of persons are participating in this event which we are proud sponsors, because, the state government has invested so much in athletics by training and sponsoring athletes, including the provision of world-class sports facilities, which were designed to encourage our youths to take advantage of in their spare time,” the Speaker said.

Earlier in a welcome address, the President of AFN and   Promoter, Warri Relays and CAA Super Grand Prix, Evangelist Solomon Ogba in his welcome address,  expressed gratitude to Governor Okowa for making the event possible.

While saying that the Delta State Government cannot do it alone, he appealed to Corporate organizations to join hands with the State Government “So that we can achieve our noble dream”.
