Delta State Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama has reiterated the
commitment of the state Government in beautifying all the cities in
the state, adding that it was ready to restore environmental laws in
the state.
The Deputy Governor said this today at the palace of the Olu of Warri,
Ogiame Atuwatse II, during an official visit to the monarch by members
of the Adhoc Committee on Special Environmental Sanitation recently
set up by Governor Emmanuel  Uduaghan.
Prof. Utuama told the Olu of Warri that as the Chairman of the Adhoc
Committee, he and his members have decided to come and pay him a
courtesy visit and intimate him about their activities.
He said the team had come to solicit the support and cooperation of
the monarch and his people so that they will be able to carry out
their assignment in his dormain without any problem.
He said; “We are here on an official assignment. We the members of the
Adhoc committee on the Special Environmental Sanitation have come to
intimate you about our activities. We are here for environmental
restoration in Warri and its environs. We know that traditionally the
Itsekiri people are clean. But because of urbanization a lot of people
have come into the community and a lot of waste are generated.
Government is committed to the beautification of the cities in the
state.”
Prof. Utuama explained that it was because the behavioural attitude of
the people toward environmental sanitation that was why the state
government set up the adhoc committee on environment to tackle the
issue of waste management.
Speaking further, the Deputy Governor said the state government has
put in place all necessary measures to ensure that the exercise does
not just end after the expiration of the ten days mandate given to
them, urging that all hands must be on deck to achieve success.
“We have put certain things in place and all hands must be on deck to
ensure that this exercise becomes a success. We recognized that we are
not going to do this for just ten days. This time around we have put
in place certain things to ensure that the exercise continues beyond
this.
He said the state government has employed one thousand environment
officers who will be in monitoring the activities of the people,
noting that anybody who abused the environmental laws will be
prosecuted.
Speaking on behalf of the Olu of Warri, Chief Mene Brown said the
monarch was glad that the state government efforts in beautifying the
cities was not just a window dressing affair, praying that they will
continue to maintain the standards they have put in place.
The monarch asssured the special environmental team of the support the people of his kingdom, advising them to ensure that people saddled
with the responsibilities play their roles.
