The member representing Uvwie, Okpe, and Sapele Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. (Barr.) Evelyn Oboro, has called for harmony among Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirants in the forthcoming Delta State local polls.

Addressing PDP Chieftains and some aspirants for the October 25, 2014 local polls at her country home in Effurun, Hon. Oboro, the first Urhobo woman parliamentarian, said the meeting was necessary so as to reduce cost of the election on aspirants.

The lawmaker implored PDP ward Chairmen and leaders in Uvwie Local Government Area to go to their various wards and talk to the aspirants on the need for them to come together and pick a particular candidate to make the burden lesser.

Hon. Oboro also explained that she called the meeting for PDP members in Uvwie to brainstorm on the October 25th council polls and look for a way forward for the election to be peaceful and cost effective.

While making it clear that a consensus candidates were not going to be imposed on the people, the lawmaker said;”We are trying to see how we can all come together as one family. I have talked to the ward chairmen and other leaders of PDP in Uvwie Local Government Area on the need for us to have consensus candidates; if they can do it that way, it will be better for us. But if they cannot, then they all have to go for the primaries and all of us will come together and rally round those candidates who will win the primaries for the election proper. The bottom line is that we all need to work in harmony as far as the forthcoming local polls are concerned.”

The lawmaker added that; “I am a very practical politician and I have been talking to the ward chairmen, party leaders and the aspirants on the need to conduct a rancor free election in Uvwie Local Government Area. There is no need for us wasting money in the election. We should come together as one big family in Uvwie, sink our differences and go for a harmonious poll in October.”

Hon. Oboro used the opportunity to inform her people that she would soon embark on another round of empowerment for the people of her constituency. She had done it before where she showered her people with cars, sewing machines, freezers and host of others.

And at the weekend, she said she was prepared to do it again for those who elected her as a lawmaker.

At the end of the meeting, the party leaders agreed to go back home and talk to their people and hailed the lawmaker for conveying the meeting.

Speaking to our correspondent after the meeting, the Uvwie Transition Committee Chairman, Hon. Bright Edejewhro, said the era of imposition of candidates on the people was over.

“The era of imposition is over. A motion was moved and seconded some weeks ago where we all agreed to go back to our various wards and call a meeting of stakeholders in the ward level and invite all the councillorship aspirants so that they can come out with a consensus candidate among them to avoid internal wrangling and those who are not picked would wait for the next election or they will be compensated by way of appointment. It is a welcome development because we have never seen it like this. As it is now there, is no other party in Uvwie except PDP,” Hon. Edejewhro said.
