The boxing match which took place at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Lagos attracted a crowd with some still purchasing entry tickets saw the fans and orgsnisers surprised because the game was concluded within one minute sixteen seconds as the organisers did not anticipate an easy win.
According to a fan, “it was a big surprise that the boxing match we have been looking forward to has been concluded while we were still struggling to purchase entry tickets. We had desired to watch the match but the Nigerian boxer did not give us the opportunity to be entertained as he has finished his mission even before we got our tickets to go in. I am happy the Nigerian won the fight but we did not get the benefit of enjoying the fight.”
In a post match interview, Onoriode from Ethiope West Local Government Area said that the fight was a very good one as his opponent came fully prepared but was unable to withstand the punches he rained on him, adding, “the first set of contacts were enough to decide the result and outcome without waisting much time in the ring. This victory no doubt would encourage me to work harder.”
Onoriode spoke further, “I am elated, indeed very happy that I was not beaten. I want to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to God almighty and also express my appreciation to my fans, Deltans, Delta State Sports Commission and the State Government for their encouragement and support. Iam grateful to God that I did not disappoint them.”
He further explained that he would need one more victory at the Intercontinental level to qualify for all other boxing tournaments including World Boxing Organisation (W.B.O), World Boxing Association (W. B. A), International Boxing Organisation (I. B. O) among others.
Onoriode started his boxing career in Sapele in 2003 before proceeding to represent Delta State in 2004 at National Sports Festival where he won Gold.
