DELSU Splashes Cash on Deserving Students, Presents Bus to SUG

DELTA State University (DELSU), Abraka has splashed cash worth N4.7million on deserving students of the university, with a promise to reward more hardworking students in future just as it presented the Students Union Government (SUG) with a Toyota Siena bus.
DELSU VC, Professor Eric Arubayi, while speaking at the presentation of the Bus, Financial award to deserving students and recipients of the work-study programme, said the University would continue to reward hardworking students.
He said; “The school since 2010 has been assisting students with thirty thousand naira for first category of best students in each faculty, twenty thousand for second and ten thousand for third. But in 2012/2013 section, management decided to review upward to fifty thousand, thirty thousand and twenty thousand considering the present economic realities and so today we are giving out the sum of N4.7 Million; this is our own little way of trying to show appreciation to our students. I want to implore all our students to work harder for the University to recognize them.”
Prof. Arubayi explained that not a few students find it difficult to take care of their needs in the University, hence he introduced the work-study programme, “So that while you study, you work in the University as well and you are paid the sum of N10,000 at the end of the month to assist the work-study programme students.”
He disclosed that about 200 students applied for the work-study programme and 20 students were recommended for employment by the Committee, but added that; “We will go back to the list again to capture more students and increase the workforce.”
On the Toyota Siena Bus, the VC enjoined the students to put it into good use.
In his words; “We feel that our students should go around with good bus, hence management in its good wisdom decided to buy this Bus for the Students Union Government (SUG). Put the Bus into a good use as we have also assigned a driver to it.”
The President of the DELSU SUG, Agbaroli Joshua of Basic Medical Science Faculty expressed gratitude on behalf of the students to the University for the kind gesture and promised that the Bus would be used judiciously.
Comrade Chinonso Obasi, NANS Zone B Coordinator also gave the DELSU VC a pat on the back for his welfare package for the students.
Our Correspondent reports that 20 students benefitted from the DELSU work-study programme while financial assistance were given to 80 best undergraduate students in various faculties.
Meanwhile, a new executive to run the affairs for the 2012/2013 Academic Session of the DELSU Students Union Government had emerged. The executives are Agbaroli Joshua (President); Kpangban Beauty Awerosuo (Vice-President); Iwenjiwe Wilfred (Secretary General); Chukwu Chiemeka Victor (Director of Finance); Akon Ufuoma Fortune (Director of Information); Ekene Smith Adigwu (Director of Social); Shaguolo Amos Rume (Director of Welfare); Odor Kingsley Ndubuisi (Director of Sports) and Arharhire Success (Treasurer).
