Saraki Should Allow the Law To Run Its Full Course – Mulade
…Says There Should Be No Political Interference
By Francis Sadhere
National Coordinator, Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), Comrade Sheriff Mulade has advised the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki who is currently facing corruption charges in the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), to allow the law to run it’s full course.
Comrade Mulade who stated this in a telephone conversation with our correspondent today, warned that there should not be no political interference in the matter.
He said people should not play politics with a matter that has something to do with an infraction of the law as nobody is above the law.
Comrade Mulade, an environmentalist, stressed that what is happening to the Senate president is a welcome development in the polity of the country.
He noted that if Senator Saraki has falsely declared his assets as alleged, it is his responsibility to convince the court that he is innocent.
Comrade Mulade also said that what is happening to the Senate President will determine whether the judiciary is going to be trusted in the fight against corruption in the country or not.
He said the judiciary will be put to test in this trial, and that the outcome of the trial will determine whether people will still see it as the last hope of the ordinary man.
He commended President Mohammadu Buhari for distancing himself from the trial of the Senate President, stressing that any attempt to seek a political solution to what is happening to Senator Saraki will be counter-productive in President Buhari’s campaign against corruption.
“Saraki should allow the law to take it’s course. What the Code of Conduct Tribunal is doing right now is very right. Saraki should go and prove his innocence in the court. He should not see what is happening to him as a witch-hunt. This is a pure case of corruption. If it is true that he failed to declare his assets while he was the governor of Kwara State, then he must face the full wrath of the law. But if he is innocent, let the court acquit him,” Mulade said.
