Oghenruona Tejiri, Effurun
Officials of the newly inaugurated Students Union Government (SUG) of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun have been charged to uphold accountability and dialogue as vital tool of good leadership in piloting the affairs of the SUG .
This charge was given by Dr. Samuel E. Onoji, Principal and Chief Executive, Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun during the inauguration ceremony of the 2024/2025 Students Union Government (SUG) and Students Representative Council (SRC), he called on them to work for as well as sustain peace and serenity in the Institute.
The PTI Chief Executive who was represented by Dr.(Mrs.) Tina Isichei, Director, Research and Development, Dr. (Mrs.) at the ceremony held at the Institute’s Council Chamber charged them to collaborate with management of the Institute to ensure the prevailing peace and tranquility is sustained.
According to Dr. Onoji, “it is a privilege to be elected as the student’s representative and you should make it count. Whatever issues you have with the management can be resolved through dialogue without insults or protest erupting.
“Accountability is part of leadership and every dime spent either for projects or any other course should be accounted for. If you cannot handle the little entrusted to you at this level of leadership, then you cannot make a good leader tomorrow”.
Speaking further, Dr. Onoji reminded the students leaders on the need to uphold all the polices guiding their stay in the Institute, adding, “also, the Institute works with a policy of zero tolerance to cultism, examination malpractice, prostitution and all other social vices and in this light, I would want the SUG leaders to promote these principles among the student community thereby leading to continuity and a conducive learning environment.”
The Principal/Chief Executive of the Institute appealed to the students leaders to break the jinx of always asking for postponement of examination by students, informing them that constant postponement of examinations have its effects on the final year students as they will be unable to graduate with their peers, go for National Youth Service with their peers and also join the labour market with their peers.
These he said denies them of so many job opportunities as they will not be able to meet up the deadline or job openings at their time of graduation.
Dr. Onoji spoke further, “I urge this tenure of SUG to step up and ensure that classes begin when it should and also that examination postponement be a thing of the past. Remember, the office does not give the SUG and SRC executives the right to bully or intimidate others. Leadership is all about service and the willingness to serve others diligently”.
Responding, Comr. Temisan Collins Oghenevwede, newly elected SUG President assured the Institute Management that under his tenure, the Institute would be a peaceful and protest free environment.
