Preparations are underway for the anticipated 8th edition of the Warri/Effurun Peace Marathon with a view to have a seamless sporting event that would transform the oil city of Warri through the peaceful strides of competitors.

This was disclosed by Joyce Bozimo, Chief Executive Officer of WEPM, organizers of the annual event in Warri, she said that the 8th edition of the event that is approved by Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and supported by the Delta State Government would see the inclusion of schools and corporate entities to engage the people of Warri and Effurun in a festive sporting experience.

Bozimo, one of the brains behind the transformation of Warri from its notorious past, introduced the Peace Marathon eight years ago with the aim to unite the youths through sports.

As she gears up for the eighth edition on November 25, she envisions not only sustaining peace in the region but also contributing to economic growth and developmental transformation through sports.

According to Bozimo, “the marathon, extending beyond a mere race, serves as a platform to unearth hidden talents, provide opportunities for recognition and international acclaim. The 10-kilometer race is expected to draw participants from diverse backgrounds, benefiting the local economy as visitors engage in hospitality services and recreation.”

In a bid to fortify the peace dividend, Bozimo calls upon government and corporate bodies to invest in sports, she is optimistic that such investments in promotion of sports will engage the youths in positive activities, fostering a peaceful environment for all residents.

While emphasizing the inclusive nature of the Marathon, transcending tribal boundaries, Bozimo foresees a gathering where all tribes in Warri, Itsekiris, Urhobos, Ijaws as well as residents and environs would come together, breaking past enmities to foster unity, development and future champions.

She further disclosed that the Eight edition of the Peace Marathon promises to be more than just a race – a carnival and festival with renowned musicians and comedians adding vibrancy.

Bozimo’s said that her vision for the event extends beyond sports, adding, “it is a vehicle for peace, unity and economic prosperity in the region. Please, help me to sustain the even as it also provides opportunities for economic empowerment and possibly discovering marathon talent unique to this part of the country.”

“The Marathon stands as a beacon of transformation, turning the once troubled city into a symbol of athletic prowess and communal harmony,” she concluded.
