PDP Extends Caretaker Committee’s Tenure
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday extended the tenure of Senator Ahmed Markafi- led caretaker committee by one year.
The party reconvened at its Rivers State secretariat in Port Harcourt after armed security operatives sealed off the Sharks International Stadium venue of the convention.
Elections of national officers were removed from the day’s business after the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Leo Ogor, called for amendment of the convention agenda.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, moved the motion for extension of the caretaker committee’s tenure and it was ratified by those at the gathering.
Markafi in his acceptance speech promised to rebuild, unite and restore the party’s glory.
I Did Not Seal Off PDP Convention Venue – Rivers CP
Mr. Francis Odesanya, the Rivers State Police Commissioner, has said that he did not seal off the convention venue of the Peoples Democratic Party, but was only providing security.
The announcement follows earlier report that the Nigeria Police Force sealed off the Sharks Stadium, venue of the PDP National Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Odesanya explained that he was only following a court order, and that he was not in a position to interpret court judgment.
Odesanya said: “I did not seal off the convention venue. I was only providing security. I was only obeying a court order. It is not my duty to interpret court order.”
Meanwhile two Federal High Courts in Abuja and Port Harcourt had given conflicting positions on the PDP National Convention that was to hold in the Rivers State capital.
A blockade was mounted by the police on a road leading to Sharks Stadium, the venue of the botched PDP National Convention on Wednesday
While the court in Port Harcourt had ruled that the convention should hold, the Abuja High Court ordered that the exercise should not hold and warned police and the Independent National Electoral Commission to stay away from it.
But while the police sealed off the venue of the convention, the state CP insisted that his men were only providing security.
