Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated essential science equipments worth millions of Naira to selected secondary schools in Delta State.

Making the donation in Effurun, Mr. Effiong Akwa, Interim Administrator/ Chief Executive of the NDDC said that the aim was to facilitate the effective teaching and learning of science subjects in the schools.

He noted that science and technology was pivotal to achieving a sustainable societal growth, hence the need to encourage the young ones to study sciences.

Mr. Akws disclosed that 46 schools across the Niger Delta region would benefit from the Commission’s initiative.

According to him, “no society has ever developed in a sustainable manner without the development of it’s science and technology. They are keys that turns the ignition of sustainable development which moves society forward. Today, we are donating essential science equipments to 46 schools across the region.”

Mr. Akwa added, “the goal of this Commission is to facilitate the effective teaching and learning of science subjects to stimulate and foster the interest of the young minds in the study of sciences. We recognised that these are the future leaders and key players in the regional growth strategies and effort that will ensure the region reaps adequate reward from it’s natural riches.”

The Interim Administrator/Chief Executive of the NDDC spoke further, “we also recognised the relevance of science education and it’s capacity to apply vital life-skills to everyday activities hence the need to equip our laboratories with modern science experiment.”

Mr. Akwa further disclosure that the Commission had resolved to build educational infrastructures as a catalyst to addressing the socio-economic challenges in the oil-rich region.

He said that the Commission had reviewed it’s Post-Graduate Scholarship scheme to include approved Universities in Nigeria and urged young graduates in the region to take advantage of the opportunity.

He also said that the interventionist agency was on the process of engaging the Nigeria Local Content Management Board in the recruitment and placement of the Commission’s Post-Graduate scholars.

In his remarks, Chief Patrick Ukah, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Delta State represented by Mr. Oghoro Augustine, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Ogoro Augustine expressed appreciation to the NDDC for the donation.

Chief Ukah said that education was a veritable tool in achieving growth and development in the society.

He assured that the equipments would be judiciously used for the purposes they are meant.

According to Chief Ukah, “we commend the NDDC for it’s continuous support to governments in the region to provide quality education and others. Delta State Government identifies with the NDDC. Delta has about 470 secondary schools, so the Commission should try and increase the scope of coverage of it’s donation to enable many other secondary schools in the State benefit.”

Some of the benefitting schools in Delta includes Okotie-Eboh Grammar School, Sapele, Hussey College, Warri, Aboh Grammar School, Aboh, Army Day Secondary School, Effurun, Notre Dame College, Ozoro, Owhrode Secondary School, Owhrode, Ogbe-Ijoh Secondary School, Ogbe-Ijoh among others
