Lockdown: Warri South takes delivery of truckload of govt palliatives
The Warri South Local Government of Delta has taken delivery of a truckload of food items from the state government.
The Council Chairman, Dr Michael Tidi disclosed this to newsmen on Saturday in Warri.
The items are palliatives from the state government meants to cushion the effect of the lockdown order which had been on since April 1.
Tidi said that the items included: 220 bags of beans (100kg), about 480 bags of rice (50kg) and cartons on Indomie noodles.
The chairman who received the items alongside some political office holders in the local government said the distribution of the palliatives would commenced on Sunday.
“We have taken delivery of palliatives by the state government and distribution of the food items to the beneficiaries will commence today (Sunday).
“The template as handed by the state government is to ensure that considerable chunks of the vulnerables and indigents have a feel of the state government gesture,” he said.
Tidi said that political office holders in Warri South had also pool resources together to buy food items that would be added to the government’s palliatives.
“In Warri South especially the political office holders: representatives of the Warri South Constituency One and Two, Commissioner for Technical Education, we had a synergy type of palliative measure.
“In addition, we reached out to member representing Warri Federal Constituency, Thomas Ereyitomi and Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District, James Manager, they made huge donations.
“The money was sumed up to buy food items which we added to that of the state government,” he said.
Tidi said that the palliatives was meant for the vulnerables and indigents in the council adding that the sharing was a community-driven process.
“The process of distribution is not politically inclined.There are no party chairmen or stalwart in the committee, it is community-driven.
“The committee comprised great leaders from each of the wards, community leaders, religious and opinion leaders.
“It is the community leaders that help us identify the vulnerables in their midst, we cannot seat in the confines of our offices and identify them,” he said.
The chairman said that the council in collaboration with members representing Warri South Constituency one and two at the Delta House of Assembly had embarked on a robust advocacy on the COVID-19 global pandemic.
He urged people to comply with the lockdown order and observed personal hygiene and other precautionary measures.
Also speaking, Mr Austin Oruoye, member representing Warri South Constituency One at the Delta House of Assembly said that it was not a party issued assuring that the items would be judiciously disbursed.
