The Ijaw Youth Congress, (IYC) worldwide on Tuesday described the siege on the National Assembly by maxed men of the Department of State Service (DSS) yesterday as coup against democracy.
In a statement by the IYC President, Oweilaemi Pereotubo and made available to journalists in Warri the group also said that the siege on the National Assembly was the height of political brigandage.
The group stressed that if the country must survive under democratic governance, perpetrators of the reasonable act must not go unpunished.

IYC however commended Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for acting promptly to save democracy by sacking the DSS boss.

However, the group stated that the sack of the DSS boss was not enough, adding that the DSS boss should be should be tried for treason, while a holistic investigation be carried out to ascertain the mystery behind the unlawful invasion and barricade of the National Assembly by overbearing DSS members.
“If serious action is not taken against the perpetrators of this felonious act, even the Office of the President is not safe,” the group started.
The statement read in part: “Political actors should be wary of their actions. This is one illegal action too many within a space of one month. Nigerians will not sit and allow desperate politicians to endanger our hard-won democracy. The people will cause civil revolution should anything happens to this democracy.
“Those who want to effect leadership change in the NASS should follow the due process prescribed by the Constitution. Unconstitutional action only begets unconstitutional response and the end is anarchy. Nigerian politicians should learn from the bitter part of our political history.
“We fear that desperate politicians may even use compromised security agencies to thwart and overthrow democratic institutions under the watch of Buhari’s Presidency and such poses serious danger to the survival of democracy in Nigeria. If such is however allowed to fester and being celebrated by the government of the day then the next target is the seat of government of the federation.
“The happenings in the Country has given credence to our earlier call that the present government needs to rejig the security architectures in the Country. The Acting President should therefore take the bull by the horn to effect change in the top security structures.”
