The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) emphatically denied media reports suggesting that it had withdrawn from the appeal process in the ongoing Kano Governorship election petition case.

The Commission clarified that the letter, which indicated a withdrawal, was unauthorized and promptly retracted. The officer responsible for the letter has also been reprimanded.

According to INEC in a statement made available to journalists in Warri, the public should disregard any insinuation that the Commission has abandoned the appeal or withdrawn from the case. It emphasized that when litigants involve INEC in a case, the Commission is obligated to respond accordingly. As a result, INEC has instructed its lawyers to proceed with the case in accordance with its existing policy, which remains unchanged.

The Kano Governorship election petition case has been a matter of great significance and interest, with the outcome potentially impacting the political landscape in the state. The situation had caused concern among various stakeholders, as media reports of INEC’s alleged withdrawal from the case raised questions about the Commission’s commitment to the electoral process and the rule of law.

The swift response from INEC, however, seeks to dispel any doubts or speculation surrounding its involvement in the appeal process. By affirming its obligation to actively participate in such cases, the Commission aims to uphold transparency, fairness, and the principles of democracy.

Sam Olumekun mni, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized the Commission’s dedication to its constitutional duties. The statement released on Saturday reassured the public that INEC remains committed to ensuring a just resolution of the Kano Governorship election petition case.

As the legal proceedings continue, all eyes will be on the Kano State judiciary to ensure a fair and impartial determination of the case. INEC’s clarification serves as a reminder that the Commission will continue to fulfill its role as an impartial arbiter, safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and upholding the democratic values upon which the nation is built.
