Delta Online Publishers Forum Urges Military to Adhere to Rules of Engagement Following Tragic Loss in Okuama Community
In the wake of the tragic loss of 17 soldiers in Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta state, the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has issued a heartfelt statement extending condolences to the Nigerian Army and the Okuama Community.
The group has called for transparency, accountability, and adherence to rules of engagement in the handling of the unfortunate incident.
Signed by Emmanuel Enebeli and Shedrack Onitsha, Chairman and Secretary of DOPF respectively, the statement expressed deep sadness over the heinous killing of military personnel and the collateral damages that have affected numerous civilians in reprisal attacks. The incident has been described as a tragedy that diminishes humanity as a whole.
The DOPF emphasized the need for swift justice for the fallen heroes while stressing the importance of upholding rules of engagement and established judicial procedures, particularly in a democratic society like Nigeria. With the country not in a state of war or widespread civil unrest, the group urged that operations prioritize citizen rights and safety above all.
Furthermore, the DOPF called for immediate dialogue between government authorities and the military to ensure access to Okuama Community for humanitarian assessment and aid distribution.
The group emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation into the incident to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
“Additionally, a thorough investigation into the remote and attendant causes of the Okuama conflict, as already directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, must necessarily include alleged cases of extra-judicial killings during military operations, which will not only be crucial to uphold justice and maintain public trust, but will hopefully also serve as a watershed reference in addressing subsequent brewing conflicts of similar symptomatic indices across the country.
“Our thoughts are with the military and Okuama Community during this difficult time. Let us unite in our commitment to integrity, accountability, and respect for human rights for the betterment of our nation,” the statement added.
The Delta Online Publishers Forum’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to established protocols in ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens, particularly in times of crisis and conflict.
