A carnival-like crowd with over 600 support groups drawn from all the ethnic nationalities in Delta State thronged the Cenotaph, venue for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Rally in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Besides an infinitesimal fraction of the Urhobos who are yet to declare their stand on the presidential candidate to support, every part of Delta is essentially a PDP dominated area, hence the tumultuous crowd that graced the event.

The over 600 support groups with various names inscribed on billboards and placards added colour and glamour to rally in Asaba as the crowd continuously drummed while speeches were being presented.

Vice President, Namadi Sambo; National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu; Director General of Jonathan Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ahmadu Ali and Henry Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State, attested to the crowd, describing it as the handiwork of Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.

For people’s love for the President, over half of the supporters stood under the scorching heat of the sun as the available seats could not contain the crowd from 10am till 4pm when the President arrived from Benin City, the Edo State capital, where he had the rally earlier yesterday.

Delta being  home of entertainers and movie makers, more than 20 comedians and Nolly Wood Actors and Actresses added colour to the event in the persons of Raskimono, Oris Wiliki, Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, Dandy Shokey, Mama G, Inie Edo, Gordons and others.

Addressing the crowd, President Jonathan said the incoming PDP government was planning big for the youths of the nation, saying it was the desire of the PDP government that all young people should go to school and participate in nation building.

In this regard, he condemned the nefarious activities of youths who are involved in destroying properties, burning vehicles and causing harm to innocent people in the nation.

The President said a gas city which would cost 16bn dollars, an investment in oil and gas which is the biggest in Africa is being built in Ogidigben, in Warri, hence on completion, it would take all Delta youths from the unemployment market.

He also said a Maritime University, the only one in Nigeria, is also being built in Okerenkoko, another coastal community in the state.

He therefore implored all Deltans to cast their votes for the PDP in the February 14 election, saying “we will win the election and Nigeria must transform”.

Meanwhile, PDP recorded a major breakthrough in the rally when a former gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of APC, Fidelis Tilije Okemor, who lost to Otega Emerhor in the primaries, joined the party at the rally.
