Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has been commended for adopting a systematic and people-centred approach to advancing the education sector through his MORE Agenda.
The commendation came from the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State Wing, Comrade Dickson Poubeni, while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 2023/2024 Delta State Annual Teachers Award for Excellence held in Asaba.
Poubeni described the award ceremony as a deliberate effort to motivate teachers to raise the bar in service delivery and improve the overall standard of education in the state. He urged the award recipients to regard their recognition as a call to greater responsibility and renewed commitment to their professional duties.
He further described Governor Oborevwori as a teacher-friendly leader who consistently prioritises the welfare and interests of teachers, adding that educators across the state would continue to give full support to the implementation of the Governor’s MORE Agenda.
While expressing satisfaction with the administration’s policies, Poubeni appealed to the state government to urgently address the stagnation affecting primary school teachers, noting that despite the challenge, teachers—particularly at the primary level—have continued to demonstrate dedication and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Association of Primary School Heads of Nigeria (APSHON), Comrade Edward Mesere, said the awards presented to outstanding primary school heads and teachers would serve as a major morale booster, encouraging excellence and commitment within the sector.
In separate remarks, the winner of the Principal category, Barrister Samuel Ehikwe, and the Best English Language Teacher awardee, Mr. Onyemaechi Otuya, expressed delight at being selected among the best educators in the state.
They applauded Governor Oborevwori for changing the narrative by proving that hard work and dedication attract recognition, describing the initiative as a clear indication that the state government values and monitors the efforts of teachers.
Otuya noted that the Governor’s magnanimity through the award scheme had positively impacted many lives and called for its sustenance, while Ehikwe described the honour as the peak of his professional career. He urged teachers to consistently give their best in order to qualify for future recognition.
The annual awards ceremony highlighted the state government’s commitment to promoting excellence in education and strengthening teacher motivation across Delta State.
