Traditional Councils of Chiefs Plays Vital Role In Preserving Cultural Heritage and Serving as Custodians of Their Traditions And Values.
In addition, they provide guidance and support to their communities while resolving disputes and promoting peace.
They also represent community unity and cohesion, offering wisdom and counsel to community members and leaders.
In recent times however, the Ogharefe traditional council of Chiefs had decided to jettison their core mandate and got entangled in politicking.
This was evident in the recent press statement rolled out by the council on the just concluded APC Local Government Congress held in Oghara Delta state.
WHY TRADITIONAL COUNCIL OF CHIEFS SHOULD STAY APOLITICAL
(1)
Accommodation:
By remaining neutral, the Traditional Council of Chiefs can engage with all political stakeholders, fostering unity and cooperation.
(2)
Non-Partisanship:
Traditional Chiefs should avoid taking sides such as was done in their communique ensuring their influence is not biased, tilted or skewed to favour a particular course.
(3) Preserving Tradition: The primary focus of the Traditional Council of Chiefs should be on upholding cultural values and traditions, NOT “POLITICS” .
RISKS OF POLITICIZATION
(A) Erosion of Trust: Traditional Chiefs’ involvement in politics can undermine their authority and credibility.
(B) Anarchy: When chiefs take sides, it can lead to social unrest and conflict.
(C) Loss of Wisdom: Politicization can compromise their wisdom and impartiality.
It is obvious that the Ogharefe Traditional Council of Chiefs’ press statement on the just concluded APC Local Government Congress was laced with biases suggestive of a fifth columnist that is desirous of destabilizing the political situation in Oghara and Ethiope West.
Traditional Council Chiefs should focus on their core mandate, leaving politics to politicians.
This will ensure that they remain respected, authoritative and effective in their roles.
