Ogheneruona Tejiri, Warri
Warri Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (WACCIMA) has called
on the Delta State government to deepen it’s relationship with the private sector.
This call was made by Mr. Anthony Okoh, President, Warri Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (WACCIMA) in an interview with Reformeronline in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
Represented by Bismarck Ighorodje Esq. Director General and Legal Adviser, WACCIMA, Mr. Okoh
commended Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State for his intervention in some critical sectors of the state’s economy.
Mr. Okoh highlighted some of the areas the state government had done so well to include health, roads, education, wealth creation, agriculture, housing and urban renewal and fiscal management.
According to the Mr. Okoh, “WACCIMA at its Council meeting held recently resolved to commend the governor for the good works he is doing majorly on infrastructure including roads construction within the Warri metropolis and the wider state.
“Over 500 road projects were initiated across the 25 local government areas, with more than 1, 500km of the roads and about 950 km of drains completed or ongoing.
“The flyover bridges in the twin cities of Warri and Effurun are second to none. People were initially sceptical about the success of the road projects. It was likened to be one of those abandoned projects.
“Surprisingly, government has taken the projects to at least 98 per cent completion.
“So, the chamber needs to commend the governor and further encouraged him to deepen relationship with the private sector to enhance wealth creations.”
Mr. Okoh emphasised that over 2.8 million Delta residents enrolled in the state Contributory Health Insurance Scheme.
He also acknowledged the provision of free healthcare services for pregnant women and children under five years among others in the health sector.
The President of WACCIMA added, “in education, the government operationalised Southern Delta University campus in Orerokpe and College of Health Sciences in Ozoro.
“He has paid N1 billion bursary to over 60,000 Delta students across two sessions, recruited more than 600 staff and approved about 35 per cent salary increase for tertiary staff.
“The government also released about N1 billion to support the Micro Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (MSMEs) in the state”.
Mr. Okoh noted that with these kind of laudable gestures, it was obvious that the government was supporting and making businesses easier for the MSMEs operators in the state.
He encouraged the government to sustain the tempo, stressing that to whom much is given, much is expected.
The WACCIMA President decried lack of access to liquidity as major challenge confronting business owners in the state.
He also highlighted inadequate power supply as another great concern to business operators in the state and urged the state government to address those concerns.
