Veteran Journalist Asiwaju Adebayo Urges NUJ Members to Utilize Contacts for Professional Growth

By Francis Sadhere, Warri

Comrade Asiwaju Sola Adebayo, a veteran journalist and philanthropist, has called on members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents’ Chapel to leverage their personal contacts to enhance the welfare of fellow journalists.

Speaking during a reception held in his honor at Peb Global Hotel in Jeddo, Delta State, Adebayo emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among members to foster professional growth.

Adebayo advised journalists to use their connections—whether with law enforcement, military personnel, or government officials—to uplift their colleagues, urging them to collaborate rather than compete. “If you have contact with anyone, use it to better the lots of other members,” he stated.

Reflecting on his own journey into journalism, Adebayo revealed that his late elder brother inspired him to pursue this path. He shared his unique approach to the profession, focusing on long-term relationships rather than short-term financial gain.

“I prefer contracts that provide sustained benefits over immediate monetary compensation,” he explained, recalling his experiences with companies like NBTC in Warri.

Adebayo, accompanied by his wife, son, and friends, called for an end to gossip and backbiting within the union, urging members to work together for collective advancement.

He expressed gratitude for the recognition he received, noting that he feels he has yet to fully merit such honors. He pledged to leverage his connections to establish a welfare scheme for the chapel and to facilitate the creation of a permanent Press Centre in Warri.

Mrs. Adebayo echoed her husband’s sentiments, encouraging members to cultivate love and faith in God to achieve success.

In his welcome address, Comrade Victor Okpomor, Chairman of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, praised Adebayo’s contributions to journalism in the region and beyond.

He acknowledged Adebayo’s consistent support for members and prayed for his continued health and success.

The event concluded with the presentation of awards and recognition framed photographs, celebrating Adebayo’s dedication to the journalism profession and his philanthropic efforts.
