Okowa hails Isioma Nelson as Delta State wins NNPC 2017 Nat’l Quiz Competition
Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has congratulated Delta State representative in the just concluded NNPC 2017 National Quiz Competition, Master Isioma Nelson Ifeanyichukwu for emerging overall winner in the competition.
Isioma a Deltan and student of Federal Government College, Warri, won the competition with 75 points to beat his closest challengers, Benjamin Chisom Chinueze (Abia) and Akinbulugbe Oluwatobiloba (Ondo) who scored 70 and 65 points to emerge second and third respectively.
Governor Okowa in a statement on Saturday in Asaba, by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu, congratulated Isioma for the feat and for being a good ambassador of the state.
The Governor commended the NNPC for the sponsorship of the competition in the last 16 years assuring that Delta State will continue to improve on educational facilities in the State to encourage optimum performance from teachers and students.
Governor Okowa noted that the role of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in the quest for nation building cannot be over emphasized, adding that it is a top priority in Delta to ensure that all public secondary schools in the State have qualified teachers in requisite subjects.
“I thank the NNPC for the continued sponsorship and for ensuring best standards in the quality and integrity of the quiz competition by partnering with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), as well as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN).
“We have continued to support Technical Education in the State by revamping existing Technical Colleges in the State with cutting edge science and technology equipment and functional laboratories.
“the empowerment of teachers has always been our priority, more so, now that the United Nations has adopted it as the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal for Education.
“As a way of encouraging teachers for optimum performance, the welfare of teachers, including payment of salaries, promotions, training and sundry obligations, have continued to occupy centre stage in my administration, in spite of very limited resources in the midst of economic recession coupled with the huge workforce in the State”.
Governor Okowa further said his administration would construct Teachers’ Development Centre for the training and retraining of teachers to ensure quality teachers in the school system.
