Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strategic interventions in the fight against insecurity across Nigeria, while urging for sustained efforts to consolidate the gains made so far.

The commendation came during the senator’s familiarization visit to the 63 Brigade Headquarters in Asaba, Delta State, where he was received by Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Folu Shonibare.

Addressing officers during the visit, Senator Joel-Onowakpo highlighted what he described as “significant progress” in the nation’s security landscape over the past two years under President Tinubu’s leadership. He attributed this progress to the President’s political will and commitment to funding the country’s security architecture.

“I want to commend the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR who has done exceptionally well in curtailing insurgency in every part of the country within the last two years, even though there is still a lot more to be done regarding the security of lives and properties,” the senator stated.

The lawmaker, who serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, called on Nigerians to see security as a collective responsibility.

“To the citizens, security is everybody’s responsibility. Like it is said in the United States, ‘If you see something, say something.’”

Senator Joel-Onowakpo also praised the National Assembly, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, for providing the legislative backing necessary for peace and security initiatives. He noted that the collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government has created an enabling environment for the armed forces to operate effectively.

He emphasized that his visit was a personal engagement and not an official Senate oversight function. “My visit today is to familiarize myself with the military formations around my constituency and commend our gallant officers for their dedication. This is not a Senate oversight function, but a personal engagement to hear directly from those at the frontlines,” he said.

The senator also took time to express his gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwanbin Musa, whom he referred to as “a fine gentleman, a gallant soldier, and my own brother,” for facilitating the visit.

In his tribute to fallen heroes, especially those who lost their lives during recent operations in Okuama, Delta State, Senator Joel-Onowakpo called for a minute of silence in their honour.

“We honour our fallen heroes—those who gave their lives for the peace we enjoy today. Their sacrifice must inspire us to do better as a nation,” he said solemnly.

The senator concluded by commending the Brigade Commander, officers, and men of the 63 Brigade for their unwavering dedication to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians, particularly in Delta State and its environs.
