The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), Professor Samuel Asagba, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap aimed at repositioning the institution as the first choice for students in Delta State and across Nigeria.
Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday ahead of the university’s 17th Convocation Ceremony, held at the Faculty of Management Sciences Auditorium, Professor Asagba outlined his comprehensive vision for DELSU’s transformation into a centre of academic excellence and moral uprightness.
“In my vision for Delta State University, Abraka, I see campuses that are physically and aesthetically developed, offering a holistic and peaceful environment, with academic programmes that produce graduates equipped with marketable skills relevant to societal needs,” he stated.
The Vice Chancellor expressed his determination to eliminate social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual misconduct, and violence, while fostering a culture of discipline and academic integrity. He emphasized the need to enhance the university’s research capacity, improve infrastructural facilities, and promote innovation through an ICT-driven approach.
Professor Asagba revealed plans to strengthen DELSU’s financial base through internal and external revenue generation, including partnerships with the private sector and international education funding organizations. He also hinted at adjustments in tuition and other student fees to support accelerated development efforts.
“We will build a university with credibility and potential—one that maintains sound relationships with its host community and connects with sister institutions both locally and globally,” he added.
With a distinguished career at DELSU, including roles as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Provost of the Asaba Campus, and Dean, Professor Asagba reiterated his commitment to upholding the ideals of the university’s founding fathers.
“My dream is to build on the genuine foundations laid by past administrations and drive DELSU towards becoming a globally competitive institution,” he said.
He also pledged to improve staff welfare, promote transparency, and maintain discipline, while ensuring that all stakeholders—students, staff, alumni, and community members—are carried along in the university’s development journey.
Among other priorities, the Vice Chancellor highlighted graduate employability, upgraded research infrastructure, and global academic linkages as key pillars of his administration. He affirmed that DELSU would align its activities with international best practices to enhance its global ranking and competitiveness.
“Infrastructure like water and electricity will be addressed, and we’ll harness the power of technology to modernize our learning and research systems,” he assured.
Professor Asagba concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to the values of competence, integrity, transparency, meritocracy, and accountability, positioning Delta State University for a new era of excellence.
