Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu! Member representing Ethiope West State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly(DTHA) has said that she declined calls to contest for the Speakership position of the 7th Assembly because the system and the party wanted Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for continuity as well as peace in the political family in the state.
Hon. Ibori-Suenu disclosed this in an interview with journalists in the premises of the Assembly shortly after the inauguration of the 7th Assembly, she said in spite of the fact that she is eminently qualified to occupy the speakership position of the 7th Assembly especially being a ranking Member and one of the honourable members from Delta central, she declined such calls prior to the elections of the Speaker from members of his constituents and political associates who believed in her capacity to lead the hallowed chambers of the Delta State House of Assembly because party is supreme and does not want to rock the political boat of Delta state.
It would be recalled that Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori was re-elected unopposed as Speaker of the 7th Assembly by the entire 29 members of the Delta State House of Assembly during the inauguration of 7th Delta State House of Assembly on Monday June 16, 2019 making him the first Speaker to be re-elected to lead the Assembly.
According to the daughter of the political czar and kingmaker of Delta state politics Chief James Onanefe Ibori, said “the party is supreme, I have no problem towing the line of the party in choosing who to lead us in the Legislative Arm of the Delta State Government. I am confident that with the undeniable experience of the re-elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori of the 6th Assembly garnered and deployed then, he would worked harmoniously with Members to carry the whole House along to enable us in Assembly to exceed our previous performance in the number of Bills passed into law as well as help to foster and strengthen collaborative work with the Executive in the overall interest of generality of Deltans.”
The Chairperson of the Appropriation and Finance Committee of the 6th Assembly restated her desire to continue to sponsor and support private bills that will be beneficial to Deltans even as she vowed to continue her SHI initiative Constituency programme that have been providing free maternal health care services to communities in her Constituency. She also promised to invest in Education and other sectors that will positively affect the people.
