46 Years Old Woman Commits Suicide in Ekiti

A 46-year-old woman identified as Mrs. Ajibola, was found hanging in her residence located at 4, Ajebamidele Street, Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The death of the woman, a mother of three children, threw the residents of the area into deep mourning.

She was suspected to have taken her own life around 6 pm on the fateful day after many unsuccessful attempts to kill herself in the past.

It was gathered that prior to Ajibola’s death, she had reportedly informed landlords in the area of her intention to address a world press conference slated for 6.30 pm on Tuesday.

A neighbour, who preferred not to be named, said: “It was when some of us arrived to listen to what she had to tell us that we discovered that she was no where to be found.

“It was when we were searching for her that we saw her dangling body hanging from the roof in her house.”

He said the victim was mentally ill and had undergone treatment several times, revealing on several occasions in the past, she had threatened to take her own life.

“There was even a time she said she would jump into the well and we had to announce to all the landlords in the area that they should make sure that their wells are well secured and covered to avoid any mishap,” he said.

Another witness, who also pleaded not to be quoted, said the deceased was full of life when she saw her on Tuesday morning, describing her as gentle and jovial.

“It is unfortunate that we lost her but I think she had been sick for some time,” she said.

When journalists visited the deceased’s residence at about 8am, the bungalow was deserted and was under lock and key.

At the Ologede Police Station where the case was reported, a senior police officer referred our correspondent to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alberto Adebayo.

Some sympathisers, possibly relatives of the deceased, were seen in groups at the police station discussing the incident.

One of the sympathisers, who said the deceased was her relative, disclosed that the corpse has been deposited in the morgue of Mary Assumpta Catholic Hospital, Ajilosun.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, said the command had launched investigation into the suspected suicide to unravel the circumstances surrounding it.
