Delta Governor Mourns Veteran Journalist Pa Joe Onyibe, Hails His Legacy in Grassroots Journalism

Asaba, August 1, 2025 — Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound grief over the passing of veteran journalist and publisher, Pa Joe Onyibe, describing his death as a monumental loss to the journalism profession, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Ika nation, and the state as a whole.
In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, and addressed to the Onyibe family, the Ika community, and the media fraternity, Governor Oborevwori paid glowing tribute to the late media icon, who died at the age of 90.
According to the governor, Pa Joe Onyibe was a pioneer in grassroots journalism, whose decades-long contributions to public enlightenment and community development stood out in the annals of media history in Delta State.
“Pa Joe Onyibe, who died at 90, was a trailblazer, having used journalism to amplify the voices of his people and advance the cause of good governance and social justice. His death is indeed a monumental loss,” Oborevwori said.
He noted that through his widely respected publication, The Ika Voice Newspaper, the late journalist remained steadfast in promoting truth, fairness, and accountability, earning him admiration far beyond the Ika nation.
“His passion for ethical journalism and community advocacy left an indelible mark on the media landscape of Delta State,” the governor added.
Governor Oborevwori commiserated with the bereaved family, urging them to take comfort in the rich legacy their patriarch left behind. He also extended condolences to the leadership and members of the NUJ, Delta State Council, and the entire Ika community, whom he said shared in the grief of losing an illustrious son.
As the state mourns the veteran publisher, the governor called on young journalists to draw inspiration from Pa Onyibe’s lifelong dedication to journalistic integrity and selfless service to humanity.
“Let us all reflect on the values Pa Joe Onyibe stood for—truth, service, and justice. I urge the new generation of journalists to carry forward these ideals as a tribute to his memory,” Oborevwori stated.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased and pledged the government’s support to honor his legacy in appropriate ways.
