Students of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) have been warned to steer clear of social vices, be committed to their studies just as the welfare of the students is a top most priority to the management of the institution.

This warning was handed down by Prof. John Ovwata Etu-Efeotor, Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun(FUPRE) during the 7th matriculation ceremony of 2013/2014 academic session, he disclosed that the first set of workshops and laboratories for the College of Technology are ready for use.

Prof. Etu-Efeotor said that arrangements are in top levels to commence work on the TETFund sponsored workshop and laboratories to give the desired leverage to the University’s primary goal of being  a specialized university, being the first petroleum university in Africa and fifth in the world.

According to Prof.  Etu-Efeotor. “you must guide your liberty with conscience tied with responsibilities. You must not forget the primary responsibility of being in the University, which is to acquire knowledge and expertise not just to change your destiny, but the well being of society. Therefore, you must prove at the end of your stay in this University that you have been refined in character and learning to affect the society.”

On accreditation of courses, Prof. Etu-Efeotor has this to say, “we are trying to address the issue of accreditation as two workshops are in advance stages of completion, furnishing of the workshop is almost completed and the workshops are connected to electricity as installation of equipments will commence very soon. Work will soon commence on the new workshop and laboratories for the Petroleum Engineering Department which was attracted by the late Senator Pius Ewherido. He was a lover of this University in every sense.”

The Vice Chancellor spoke further, “I will therefore admonish you to do your bits as committed students. You must avoid the pitfalls that are often attendant in the environment you now find yourself. Such pitfalls include examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, indiscipline, non committal to your studies and sexual abuse which of course goes with a price of either unwanted pregnancy or viral diseases including HIV/AIDS.”

Prof. Etu-Efeotor further disclosed that management is working hard to put in place hostels for the students, adding, “job order for the students centre will soon be awarded. Student’s welfare is so close to my heart. The University ambulance would henceforth be stationed in the University Campus.

High point of the ceremony was the administration of matriculation oath on the students as well as the symbolic signing of the matriculation register by matriculating students representing various faculties.

Four hundred and twenty-one (421)students matriculated at the ceremony.
