Harmattan fire engulfs storey building in Warri, destroys property worth millions
Harmattan fire on Thursday engulfed a storey building at First Marine Gate, Warri, Delta State destroying property worth millions of naira.
According to eyewitnesses the fire was caused by a refuge dump which was burning close to the house.
National Reformer reports that the burning refuse spread to a nearby shanty house that was behind the storey building.
All efforts to put out the fire that has spread to the shanty was unsuccessful as the Harmattan breeze fueled the fire which subsequently spread to the storey building behind.
One eyewitness who spoke to our reporter said access to the storey building was difficult as some of the residents were on holiday.
In spite of efforts by area boys and passers-by to put out the fire, the building was completely raised down.
As at the time of filing this report fire fighters were nowhere to be seen.
The Warri South Council Vice Chairman, Mrs Divine Iniovosa who rushed to the scene of the incident told our reporter that she had earlier called the firefighters but was told that their truck was faulty.
No life was however lost during the fire outbreak as all occupants of the building were successfully evacuated before the fire engulfed the building.
