ATTACK ON SENATOR IKE EKWEREMADU IN GERMANY, CONDEMNABLE, STRONG LESSON FOR NIGERIAN SERVING POLITICIANS
By Zik Gbemre
While we wholeheartedly condemn in strong terms, the recently reported attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu at the 2nd Annual Igbo Cultural Festival held in Nuremberg, Germany, we also believe the said incident should be a strong lesson to all Nigerian politicians in power.
They should be reminded of the undeniable fact that one day, they will face being humiliated and publicly disgraced, if they continue with their wicked and self-centered style of governance, which has created and increased the number of Nigerians in abject poverty and lack of access to the basic human needs of society. And which has also made Nigerians to leave in their droves to foreign countries in search of greener pastures that are not there.
The said unfortunate incident should be a strong lesson to serving Nigerian politicians to realize that when they vacate the seat of power, that they could be attacked anywhere, be it home or abroad, as a result of their actions and inactions towards the masses while in Government.
The anger and agitation we saw being portrayed by the said Igbo community in Germany, is just an example of ‘built up frustration’, as a result of the many years of bad governance all across Nigerian, which the people saw an opportunity to ‘vent’ it.
Having left power, these Nigerian Politicians will be without their usual many security Operatives/Guards and aides, as such, they will be exposed to face such public shame at home and abroad.
Agreed that the said incident was an embarrassment to the country, and also shamefully pathetic that an event, which we believe was put together by the Ndi-Igbo community whose members make up the majority of Nigerians living in Germany, but ended up in such a disgraceful manner, however, let us also consider the reasons why these things happen, and the need for our political leaders to learn from them.
Though, it is a criminal offence, in most developed countries of the world, especially in Western countries, to public assault someone because if they are caught, they may face deportation and jail term; but my take is that whatever seeds you plant today while in public office, you will definitely reap same in triple folds in the near or far future.
My candid advice to Nigerian Politicians is that they should update themselves, wise up and be properly educated in carrying out their statutory responsibilities while in government because once they are no more in government, every sin they have committed might visit them. A word, they say, is enough for the wise.
