The Aliko Dangote Foundation, on Tuesday, marked another milestone in its humanitarian outreach with the official flag-off of a food support programme in Asaba, distributing 10,000 bags of 10kg rice to vulnerable individuals and families across Delta State.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori commended the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of compassion and shared humanity.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Governor said the donation aligned with his administration’s MORE Agenda, which prioritises welfare, inclusion, and sustainable development for all Deltans.
“While the rice distributed here today may not feed everyone, it represents something much greater — the spirit of care, compassion, and shared humanity. If each of us gives a little of what we have to our neighbours, the world would indeed become a better place,” Oborevwori said.
The Governor hailed the Aliko Dangote Foundation as one of Africa’s most impactful philanthropic organisations, noting that its interventions have continued to touch millions of lives across the continent.
“Alhaji Dangote’s compassion and dedication to humanity stand as an inspiration to all. He is not doing this for recognition or politics, but out of a genuine desire to make life better for others,” he added.
Governor Oborevwori further highlighted his administration’s ongoing welfare programmes, including a monthly support scheme for 10,000 widows amounting to ₦1.8 billion annually, as well as widespread enrolment in the state’s Contributory Health Scheme. He noted that other ministries have also rolled out empowerment initiatives benefiting thousands of residents.
He, however, cautioned against diversion of the rice meant for the poor, calling for fair and transparent distribution to ensure that the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and orphanages receive their rightful shares.
Head of Operations, Aliko Dangote Foundation, Mr. Victor Ejiro, who represented the Foundation, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians.
He explained that the rice distribution was part of a nationwide initiative covering all 774 Local Government Areas across the country.
“We are delighted to be in Delta State today for the official presentation of 10,000 bags of 10kg rice to support vulnerable individuals and families. Our focus is on artisans, market women, widows, and persons with disabilities. We are working closely with local government councils to ensure these items reach the intended beneficiaries directly in their communities,” he stated.
Ejiro noted that the Foundation, established over 30 years ago, has been at the forefront of interventions in health, education, empowerment, and nutrition. He also commended Governor Oborevwori for his strong commitment to food security and welfare initiatives.
Earlier in her welcome remarks, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Hon. Pat Ajudua, described the intervention as timely and impactful, given the current economic challenges confronting vulnerable groups.
“Every effort aimed at making life easier for them is not only commendable but highly necessary. We are optimistic that this initiative marks only the beginning of greater things to come,” Ajudua said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Okpe Local Government Council and State ALGON Chairman, Chief Isaiah Esiovwa, applauded the Foundation for its compassion and service to humanity, saying the gesture reflects the values of empathy and solidarity that grassroots leaders strive to uphold.
Beneficiaries of the distribution include physically challenged persons, the elderly, ex-lepers, orphanages and charity homes, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and the Muslim community, among others.
