People and residents of Udu State Constituency in Delta State have been assured that the September 19 House of Assembly by-election will be held as scheduled.
This assurance was given by Sir Etekamba Udo Umoren, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Delta State while briefing journalists in Asaba, he promised a free, fair and transparent exercise.
Sir Umoren disclosed that INEC had commenced preparations following the declaration of a vacancy in the Constituency by the Delta State House of Assembly.
Sir Umoren said that INEC had published the notice of election and received directives from its headquarters to conduct the poll, he stressed that the affected Constituency should not remain without representation while the legislative year was ongoing.
According to Sir Umoren, “political parties that participated in the 2023 election and are eligible for the by-election are expected to conduct their primaries between August 21 and 25, with INEC monitoring the processes.
“Parties would submit nomination forms through the INEC portal from August 29 to September 2, while the final list of nominated candidates would be published on September 8. Campaigns will begin on September 9 and end on September 17, ahead of the September 19 election.”
The Delta State Resident Electoral Commissioner further disclosed that the Constituency has nine registration areas and 265 polling units, he assured voters that BVAS would be deployed and technical personnel positioned to address possible glitches.
Responding to concerns raised over security and possible litigation, Sir Umoren said he was unaware of any circumstance that would prevent the election, adding that INEC had not received any court notice challenging the process.
He called on political parties, the media and residents to verify information before publication just as he appealed for cooperation to ensure a credible election.
He also clarified that the by-election is for previously registered voters and does not apply to newly registered persons.
