SOCIAL MALICE OF IT: IMPLICATION ON SECONDARY SCHOOLS STUDENTS. REVOLUTION OR EVOLUTION?
BY OGBORU A. OGHENETEGA
Information has always played a very important part in human life, but this article comprises of the vigorous/rapid negative implication of ICT on secondary school students.
The internet is globally widespread in use, becoming an integral of IT within various schools as well as homes. Its major relevance of educative information’s has been side washed by majority of Nigerian students for its social value, which ought not to be so.
Social networks like FACEBOOK, 2GO, TWITTER E.T.C. now serve as major distractions to students. Rather than FACING THEIR BOOKS, they prefer to go on FACEBOOK. What one can glean from the above is that students still see the internet largely as a recreational tool. As pointed out by a Google executive who came to Nigeria last year, Nigeria is a net consumer of web content with little contribution to the web information tool.
We are crazy about all these social networks, forgetting that they came to existence as a result of someone’s intelligence.
Furthermore, the exposure from IT to students is alarming, for its corrupts their level of reasoning, and when students attention are distracted from their major academic responsibility, it becomes difficult for that student to perform well. Therefore, irresponsible sites should be hidden out of the reach of students.
In dealing with the subtitle of this paper, attempt made to show whether there has been a revolution in the adoption and development of information technology in Nigeria especially in support for the improvement of library development. If there has not been any revolution, then we should decide whether there has been much as an evolutionary trend.
A revolution may be regarded as a radical and abrupt change of circumstances or system. Evolution also involves change but rather an unfolding of events. A gradual development from a simple or primitive to an advanced system; so it left for you to decide on either of them.
Secondary school students are advised to make due use of IT under strict supervision of a guardian. For its relevance cannot be overlooked because of its negative implications on students.
