New Year Message: PDP Caretaker Chairman Calls for Unity, Due Process Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Francis Sadhere, Warri
The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Prof. Sylvester Monye, MFR, has urged party leaders, members, and Deltans at large to embrace unity, discipline, and strict adherence to democratic principles as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
In his New Year message to leaders and members of the PDP and the people of Delta State, Prof. Monye described 2026 as a critical year for the party and the state, noting that it precedes party primaries and the general elections. He stressed that decisions taken during the year would have far-reaching implications for democracy and governance.
He said that despite differences in political affiliation, all stakeholders share a collective responsibility to promote peace, stability, and orderly development in Delta State, guided by the principles of equity, justice, and collective responsibility.
Speaking on internal party affairs and ongoing legal matters involving the PDP, Prof. Monye referenced landmark Supreme Court decisions, including Anyanwu v. PDP and SDP v. INEC, which reaffirm the autonomy of political parties to manage their internal affairs without undue judicial interference.
He expressed confidence that, in line with the principle of stare decisis, the judiciary would continue to uphold these precedents while respecting matters currently before the courts.
The PDP chairman further emphasized that a strong and functional opposition remains essential to the survival of Nigeria’s democracy, warning against the dangers of a drift toward a one-party state.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Delta State PDP Caretaker Committee to constitutionalism, constructive engagement, and principled leadership, adding that the party was being reorganized and strengthened following recent defections. According to him, preparations are underway for the orderly conduct of congresses that will usher in substantive executive officers and reposition the party for future electoral contests.
Prof. Monye called on all PDP leaders and members in the state to conduct themselves with discipline, restraint, and respect for party rules and democratic norms, noting that the credibility of the party’s internal processes would ultimately determine its standing before the electorate.
Reassuring the people of Delta State, he said the Caretaker Committee would continue broad-based consultations and engagements with stakeholders across the state, with political discourse focused on good governance, development, and the rule of law.
He prayed for peace, wisdom, and purposeful leadership in 2026, expressing hope that the new year would strengthen democratic institutions and advance accountable and inclusive governance in Delta State.
