ON SOWORE’S RE-ARREST IN THE COURT FLOOR BY THE DSS – A SLAP ON THE NATION’S DEMOCRACY

By Zik Gbemre

With the appalling drama that took place in the High Court, when the officials of the Department of State Security Service (DSS), brutally violated the constitutional rights of a citizen, Omoyele Sowore, inside a Court hall, and desecrated our Judiciary as an Independent Arm of Government, we believe there is urgent need for President Muhammad Buhari to call the Authorities of DSS to order, and strongly caution their overzealousness, which has the tendency to rubbish our democracy.

The display of the said arrest by the DSS, which was like a *war front* just to arrest an armless man at the court, is an embarrassment of the country’s democracy. While Nigerians were still grappling with the blatant flouting of Court Orders by the DSS over this same matter, it is rather unfortunate that they still had the audacity to rearrest Sowore right inside the Court room, just within less than 24 hours of his release. Can’t the DSS do their work without this SHOW OF FORCE? This is not a war field. Are they trying to take us back to the military era? This is highly condemnable.

One would have expected that they wait outside the Court premises to effect their arrest, if they must. The DSS, seriously needs to restrain themselves and abide by the Rule of law. They should always operate/carry out their duties within the ambits of the law. DSS officers needs to be given civil training on how to do their job.

The President should not be silent on this issue. We cannot fold our hands and allow this democracy that many had fought for, be rubbished by the overzealousness of DSS officials.
