NUJ Appeals to Gov Oborevwori Over Flood Preparedness, Infrastructure Issues
By Francis Sadhere, Warri
The Warri Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State to effectively utilize the recently allocated N3 billion in federal disaster management funds amidst looming flood threats.
This appeal comes following warnings from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) about severe flooding risks in the region.
NUJ Warri Correspondent Chapel made this appeal on Tuesday in a communique issued at the end of its 9th Congress held at the Press Centre, Warri. They also called on the state government to take immediate action to evacuate residents in flood-prone areas
“In line with the warning by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), that at least 20 states, including Delta, will experience severe flooding, Congress calls on the Delta State Government to expedite action towards evacuating residents living in flood-prone areas in the state.
“It also calls on residents of communities along the bank of River Niger to be vigilant and ready to be evacuated.
“The Congress demands that N39.62 billion ecological fund and the recently released N3 billion approved to each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by the Federal Government in the country to tackle all forms of natural disasters, including flooding, be judiciously utilised. The N3 billion recently released to states to tackle flooding should be expended for such purpose,” the communique stated.
The Congress also focused on pressing challenges affecting Delta State and concluded with a series of resolutions aimed at addressing critical issues in governance and the welfare of residents.
Among the commendations, the Congress praised Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for the ongoing construction of significant infrastructure projects, including flyovers at Enerhen Junction, PTI Junction, and DSC Roundabout. Members noted that these projects would enhance traffic flow and improve the aesthetic appeal of Warri and Uvwie. They urged the governor to prioritize the rehabilitation of access roads around these construction sites.
In response to rising insecurity, particularly concerning kidnappings and attacks by criminal herdsmen, the Congress demanded urgent action from state authorities and law enforcement agencies. They emphasized the need for the government to establish agricultural hubs to combat food insecurity resulting from these criminal activities.
Concerns were also raised about transparency in the state’s financial dealings, particularly regarding internally generated revenue. The Congress urged the state administration to adopt monthly reporting practices to foster accountability and public trust, reminiscent of previous administrations.
Furthermore, the Congress highlighted the alarming shortage of teachers in public secondary schools, calling for immediate recruitment efforts to address gaps, especially in core subjects such as Mathematics and English.
Lastly, the group expressed worries over the transportation sector’s struggles due to rising fuel prices and suggested that the government implement a subsidized transport system to alleviate the financial burden on citizens.
The Congress believes that implementing these recommendations will significantly enhance the governance of Delta State and improve the quality of life for its residents.
