Mulade Urges Delta Govt to Embrace Industrialisation to Tackle Unemployment

By Francis Sadhere, Warri

A peace and environmental rights advocate, Mulade Sheriff, has called on the Delta State Government to urgently adopt large-scale industrialisation as a strategic response to rising unemployment and worsening socio-economic conditions.

Mulade made the appeal in a statement released to journalists in Warri on Wednesday, expressing concern over what he described as the alarming rate of joblessness across the state, particularly among youths. He warned that the growing unemployment trend poses potential security threats if not addressed promptly.

While commending Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he termed “remarkable and visible achievements” in infrastructure development across major urban centres, Mulade stressed that physical infrastructure alone would not sufficiently tackle poverty, hunger and unemployment.

According to him, the state must deliberately shift focus toward policies that stimulate industrial growth and expand employment opportunities for its teeming population.

“The governor has recorded landmark achievements in road construction and other critical infrastructure, and these efforts are commendable. However, the rising level of unemployment signals potential security threats and therefore demands urgent attention. Without industrialisation, the problems of poverty and hunger will continue to worsen,” he stated.

Mulade, who is also the Ibe-Sorimowei of the ancient oil-rich Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area, urged the government to revive moribund industries and create an enabling environment capable of attracting both local and foreign investors.

He noted that Delta State’s strategic location, abundant natural resources and skilled human capital position it to emerge as a major industrial hub if supported by the right policies and strong political will.

“The government should introduce deliberate, people-centred industrial policies, support small and medium-scale enterprises, and encourage private sector participation. Sustainable job creation can only be achieved through a robust industrial base,” Mulade added.

The environmental advocate maintained that aggressive industrialisation would not only reduce unemployment but also boost internally generated revenue and strengthen long-term economic stability in the state.
