Delta: Okowa Douses Anxiety, Says I’ll be Fair in Appointments
Omos Oyibode, Asaba
As politicians in Delta employ various strategies to influence the incoming government for political appointments, Delta State Governor-Elect, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has said that appointments into his cabinet would favour all Deltans, stressing that his administration would be an all encompassing government that would operate on a pan Delta agenda.
Okowa made the clarification during the inauguration of 98 member transition committee who would plan for the incoming administration at the Delta Government House, Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Okowa, who told the committee members that many people were apprehensive as to what the future holds following the near winding off of the current government, explained that there was no cause for anxiety as he acknowledged the role Deltans played, leading to his election.
He said he would run a government that would be acceptable to all, where every Deltan would have a sense of belonging as he is driven with the vision of prosperity for all Deltans.
Okowa said though he had been receiving Short Message Services (SMS) from desperate politicians who want political appointments, he said appointment into offices would not be based on the messages being sent, noting that even some members of the committee might not be appointed into the incoming government.
Senator Okowa explained that so many Deltans worked for his success both during the campaigns and at the polls, hence he would be fair to all in his appointments as he was not willing to disappoint any one.
He said though many are worried of what the future would hold as the present government wound up, he said the people of Delta State would find happiness if all Deltans work as a united family with the interest of the state at heart.
According to him, “it can’t be a few persons taking charge of everything. Appointment will come but there is time. One person can’t be lord over all. We must define roles so that we don’t have conflicts. One person can’t be in charge of every sector of the state economy”.
He said his government would hit the ground running as soon as it is sworn in, noting that the transition committee must work to ensure that the incoming government started on a sure and sound footing.
He said his government would stay focused in the implementation of the plans, programmes and policies that would be formulated by the committees for the next four years.
The three committees include Committee on Programmes Development for Governance, Committee on Handover and Committee on Night of Praise.
