Delta, FG Partnership to Reconstruct Warri–Sapele–Benin Road will Boost Trade, Connectivity – Oborevwori

By Francis Sadhere, Warri
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas, describing it as a strategic partnership between the Federal and State Governments to advance economic growth and improve mobility in the South-South region.
The governor said the project was part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, implemented in synergy with the Delta State Government to accelerate infrastructure renewal and enhance regional competitiveness.
“This road is not just a transportation link; it is a key economic artery that connects the South-South to other regions, facilitating trade, logistics, and industrial development,” Oborevwori said.
He explained that the project would feature a dual carriageway with reinforced concrete pavement, expanded shoulders, and comprehensive stormwater drainage systems — all designed to withstand heavy use and improve safety for motorists.
Oborevwori, who described the road as “a critical national asset long overdue for rehabilitation,” said its reconstruction would ease the movement of goods and people, reduce travel time, and boost productivity along one of Nigeria’s busiest trade corridors.
“Although this road is a federal route, the users are Deltans and Nigerians. What matters most is their safety and comfort. When governments collaborate, development happens faster,” the governor said.
The governor also revealed that the Delta State Government had paid ₦10 billion in compensation to facilitate the ongoing construction of the Second Niger Bridge access road — a key component of efforts to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between Asaba, Onitsha, and surrounding communities.
He noted that beyond economic benefits, the road reconstruction would also strengthen security in the area. “Criminals often exploit bad roads to commit crimes. Once completed, this highway will make movement safer and improve the response of security agencies,” he said.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s focus on infrastructure, peace, and security as core drivers of sustainable growth under his MORE Agenda.
“At over sixty years of age, I am not here for personal gain but to leave lasting legacies that generations will remember me for. By the time I leave office, I want Deltans to proudly say, ‘Oborevwori did this, Oborevwori did that,’” he said before officially flagging off the project at the Effurun Roundabout.
Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described the 10-kilometre project as a product of the governor’s “strategic vision to transform Delta’s infrastructure landscape.”
“This project extends five kilometres on each side and features an 8.8-metre-wide carriageway, exceeding the conventional 7.3 metres. It will be completed within 12 months,” Izeze said.
General Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Engr. Thomas Feng, assured that the company would deliver the project in record time and to international standards, adding that it would “promote safer travel, stronger connectivity, and lasting economic growth.”
Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area, Chief Anthony Ofoni, commended the governor’s people-oriented leadership and announced that the Airport Road in Effurun would be renamed Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori Way in recognition of his infrastructural legacy.
Also speaking, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom and Chairman of the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe I, lauded the governor’s commitment to urban renewal, citing ongoing flyover and road expansion projects in Warri and Effurun as evidence of a “transformative leadership that is reshaping Delta’s urban landscape.”
The event drew top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and business executives, who described the project as a major step toward reviving Delta’s transport infrastructure and stimulating regional commerce.
