The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, and the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger collaboration aimed at promoting effective public communication, institutional development, and national progress.
This commitment was underscored on Monday when the leadership of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel paid a courtesy visit to the management of PTI at the institute’s headquarters in Effurun.
Leading the delegation, Chairman of the Chapel, Okakuro Akpokona Omafuaire, said the visit was intended to consolidate the longstanding relationship between the media and the foremost oil and gas training institution.
According to him, the engagement was designed to foster constructive interaction and explore areas of mutual interest that would enhance public awareness and support institutional growth.
Omafuaire highlighted the critical role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development, stressing the importance of sustained engagement between journalists and educational institutions.
He commended PTI for its significant contributions to manpower development in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, describing the institute as a trailblazer in technical and professional training across sub-Saharan Africa.
“The media remains a strategic partner in national development. We are committed to ensuring balanced, factual and professional reportage of PTI’s programmes, achievements and contributions to the nation’s oil and gas sector,” he said.
Responding, the Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, Dr. Samuel Onoji, welcomed the delegation and described the media as an indispensable partner in advancing the institute’s vision and achievements.
Dr. Onoji acknowledged the role of journalists in projecting the activities, successes and programmes of the institution to the wider public, noting that a healthy relationship with the media remains essential for effective public engagement.
“Maintaining a robust relationship with the media remains critical to showcasing the institute’s achievements, innovations and future initiatives,” he stated.
The PTI boss pledged continued collaboration with the media, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to strengthening public understanding of its mandate and contributions to the development of Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
Providing an overview of the institution’s history, Dr. Onoji explained that PTI was established by the Federal Government to provide the skilled technical manpower required for the growth of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and to meet the country’s obligations as a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
He noted that over the years, the institute has grown into one of Africa’s leading specialised oil and gas training centres, producing highly skilled technicians, technologists and industry professionals through its diploma, certificate and specialised training programmes.
Dr. Onoji reiterated that sustaining a productive partnership with the media would remain a top priority for the institution as it continues to expand its impact in the energy sector.
The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism that enhanced cooperation between the media and PTI would contribute significantly to public enlightenment, institutional advancement and national development.
