SPEAKER, DELTA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY,
ON THE RESUMPTION OF PLENARY AFTER THE 2026 ANNUAL RECESS, ON
WEDNESDAY, 2ND SEPTEMBER, 2026
Good morning, Honourable Colleagues.
It is my honour and privilege to welcome you all back to this hallowed Chamber as we resume plenary following our annual recess.
Let me begin by expressing my profound gratitude to Almighty God for His protection, guidance, and mercies over us and our families during the period of recess. I am delighted to see all of you back in good health, refreshed and ready to hit the ground running.
Dear colleagues, while still on recess, the State marked its thirty-five years anniversary. Therefore, as we resume plenary today, we join millions of Deltans at home and abroad in celebrating 35 years of the creation of Delta State.
On behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly, I heartily congratulate His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, our dear Governor, the Government and people of Delta State on this anniversary.
Again, while the House was on recess, Delta State witnessed an important economic milestone with the successful hosting of the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit.
The Summit was conceived as a platform to showcase the enormous investment opportunities available across the State and to connect the State with domestic and international investors.
This is a commendable initiative.
Consequently, the Honourable Members of the Delta State House of Assembly commend His Excellency, the Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and his administration for this strategic initiative.
The House will continue to provide the legislative support necessary to create an enabling environment for investment, enterprise, and economic development.
My dear colleagues, let me also congratulate the government and people of the State for the expansion of representation in the Delta State House of Assembly in 2027. The number of State Constituencies has increased from 29 to 38, resulting in nine additional constituencies. This development is historic.
Representation is at the heart of democracy. The restoration and creation of additional constituencies provide an opportunity for more communities to have a direct voice in this institution and in the democratic process.
Honourable Members, our return to plenary coincides with the commencement of another important phase in our democratic journey.
Campaign activities for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections commenced on 19th August, 2026, while campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on 9th September, 2026.
As politicians and public servants, we have a special responsibility to ensure that the electoral season does not become a season of bitterness, violence and division.
I therefore wish to make a special appeal to all political parties, candidates, supporters and the general public.
Let our campaigns be about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service. Election is not a do-or-die affair.
Dear colleagues, as we resume plenary today, there is much work before us. I therefore encourage all of us to translate the knowledge and insights gained from the leadership training at the London Business School into practical improvements in our legislative work.
I urge all Chairmen and Members of Committees to approach the remaining legislative calendar with renewed vigour. Let us attend to pending Bills, Motions and Petitions with dispatch.
