A High Court Judge in Warri, His Lordship, Hon. Akpovi A.O. has made a passionate plea for the integration of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) into the Nigerian judicial system.
He made this plea in a compelling address at the 2nd Annual Congress Dialogue Day organized by the Citizens Rights Concern Enhancement Initiative (CRCEI) held at the Jubilee Retreat and Conference Centre, Effurun, Delta State.
Justice Akpovi highlighted that implementing ADR could significantly alleviate the burden on courts, reducing the backlog of cases that plagues the legal system.
“Alternative dispute resolution will help reduce the number of court cases in the country,” he stated, noting the need for innovative approaches in the pursuit of justice.
Addressing an audience comprising legal professionals, security personnel, human rights activists, and community leaders, while presenting a paper titled, “Delayed Justice in the Nigerian Judiciary System—What Can Be Done Differently,” Justice Akpovi raised an urgent issue concerning the prevalence of abandoned properties within the community.
He provocatively asked, “How many of you would support putting these properties up for auction to fund initiatives for the poor and needy?” His question prompted a thoughtful reflection on the responsibility of the community to repurpose unused assets for the benefit of vulnerable populations.
Emphasizing a collective moral duty, he implored attendees to consider their roles as neighbors and stewards of community resources. “Are we truly our neighbor’s keepers?” he challenged, urging those present to explore ways society can better utilize its resources to support those in need.
During his address, Justice Akpovi shared a recent conversation with the Chief Medical Director of a local hospital, who expressed concerns about the facility’s operational challenges. This meeting, he noted, highlighted the importance of collaboration in tackling pressing societal issues.
Reflecting on his personal commitment to justice, Justice Akpovi shared poignant anecdotes from his experiences in Abuja, where he faced threats while handling sensitive cases. Despite these risks, he affirmed his dedication to advocating for justice and improving societal conditions.
In a call for personal empowerment, he also noted the importance of self-worth and confidence in fostering a supportive community. His message resonated deeply, reminding attendees of their potential to effect positive change.
Justice Akpovi’s advocacy for alternative dispute resolution and social responsibility not only sheds light on critical issues facing the Nigerian judicial system but also inspires a renewed commitment to community welfare.
Earlier, in his address, Ambassador (Comr.) Edwore Edgedgbe, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Citizens Rights Concern Enhancement Initiative (CRCEI), outlined CRCEI’s mission to enhance citizens’ rights and promote accountability in governance.
He emphasized the organization’s collaborative approach with various stakeholders, including the police and local governments, to address critical issues like security and access to justice.
Highlighting the theme “Nigeria @ 64: Delayed Justice in the Nigerian Judiciary System—What Can Be Done Differently,” Edgedgbe stressed the urgent need for judicial reform, calling for an independent judiciary free from executive influence.
He lamented the rising delays in justice, which he claimed erode public trust in the legal system.
He said the event featured His Lordship Hon. Justice A.O. Akpovi of the Warri High Court as the guest speaker, who is expected to discuss solutions to the pressing issue of delayed justice.
Edgedgbe concluded by thanking participants, stakeholders, and government officials for their commitment to advancing citizens’ rights, urging collective action for a better Nigeria.
He added that the congress aims to empower citizens and foster dialogue on governance issues, reinforcing the importance of active civic engagement.
