Tinubu’s Education Reforms Will Boost Skills, Youth Employment – Federal Polytechnic Orogun Rector

By Francis Sadhere, Warri
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Orogun, Delta State, Prof. Duke Okoro, has thrown his weight behind the education reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as a major step towards equipping Nigerian youths with practical skills, promoting self-employment and strengthening technical education across the country.
Prof. Okoro stated this on Tuesday while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, who paid him a courtesy visit at the institution. He said the Federal Government’s renewed focus on technical and vocational education would create more opportunities for young Nigerians and reduce unemployment.
According to the rector, the institution has already secured approval for 19 academic programmes from the relevant regulatory agencies, with the Department of Mass Communication and Multimedia Studies fully equipped to meet required standards.
He disclosed that the polytechnic also plans to introduce a Music Department, noting that music offers enormous employment opportunities in churches, the entertainment industry and other sectors of the economy.
He explained that the proposed programme aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to empower youths with employable skills, stressing that many graduates would be able to create jobs for themselves rather than depend solely on white-collar employment.
He added that the initiative would also help keep young people off the streets and prepare them for productive careers after graduation.
Prof. Okoro particularly commended President Tinubu for the ongoing reforms in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the new direction would make the scheme more beneficial to graduates.
He noted that instead of merely serving for one year, corps members would now have greater opportunities to acquire practical skills relevant to their professions.
The rector also applauded the administration’s emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), saying the policy would expand access to quality education for students who are unable to secure admission into universities.
According to him, polytechnics, colleges of education and other technical institutions have a critical role to play in producing the skilled workforce needed for national development.
While acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, Prof. Okoro urged Nigerians, particularly the media, to support President Tinubu’s reform agenda to ensure its success, expressing confidence that the policies would yield positive results in the education sector and the wider economy.
Earlier, Chairman of the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, Chief Akpokona Omafuaire, Esq., called for a strategic partnership between the union and the Federal Polytechnic, Orogun, assuring the institution of the chapel’s commitment to publicising its programmes and activities.
He said the collaboration would help the polytechnic achieve the vision and mission for which it was established by the Federal Government.
