Ijaw Group Hails Tinubu, Oborevwori for Defusing Warri Delineation Tension, Urges Lasting Peace

From Francis Sadhere, Delta

The Ijaw Political Grassroots Development Movement (IPGDM) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for their decisive intervention in resolving the contentious ward delineation dispute that had threatened peace among ethnic groups in Warri Federal Constituency.

The group described the intervention by both leaders as timely and instrumental in restoring calm, commending stakeholders across the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic nationalities for embracing dialogue and choosing peace over conflict.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Sheriff Mulade, PhD, and Secretary, Hon. Omoun Ebi, the socio-cultural pressure group stressed that peace and stability in Warri remain critical to the economic prosperity of Delta State and the growth of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

According to the group, sustained harmony among the various ethnic nationalities in Warri is essential for attracting development, boosting investments, and ensuring uninterrupted oil and gas production in the region.

The IPGDM urged all stakeholders to consolidate on the gains of the peaceful resolution by fostering mutual understanding and strengthening inter-ethnic relationships.

“It is imperative to state that peace in Warri and its environs is vital for oil and gas production and the overall development of Delta State. As the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori continues to advocate, we appeal to the three ethnic groups in the area to give peace a chance and live together in harmony,” the statement said.

The group emphasized the need for community-driven conflict resolution, noting that the people of Warri have coexisted for generations through intermarriage, commerce, and social interaction.

“As stakeholders, we must work in partnership with government at all levels and with other stakeholders to ensure peace in Warri, attract the much-needed development, and further grow the state’s oil and gas sector.

“As indigenes of Warri Federal Constituency, we cannot afford to continually create tension over every misunderstanding. It is time for us to sit around a round table and resolve our differences without always relying on government intervention.

“We have lived together for centuries. No amount of conflict can erase any ethnic group from Warri. We must therefore embrace peace for the sake of future generations and work collectively for the progress of our oil city, the commercial hub of Delta State,” the group stated.

The IPGDM also called on traditional rulers across Warri Federal Constituency to provide leadership that promotes unity, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among their subjects.

“As custodians of our culture and traditions, the world is watching our revered traditional rulers. Their commitment to peace and unity remains crucial to the future and prosperity of our communities,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its appreciation, the group commended President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori for engaging critical stakeholders and facilitating discussions that ultimately led to the peaceful resolution of the dispute.

The IPGDM expressed optimism that the renewed spirit of cooperation among the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo people would pave the way for sustainable peace, accelerated development, and greater economic growth in Warri and its surrounding communities.
